Series Report: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! #1-5 by Satoru Yamaguchi

When I picked up the first book of My Next Life as a Villainess, I wasn’t at all familiar with the anime, manga, or these dating sim games at all. It just sounded super fun! The protagonist dies and wakes up inside her favorite video game…as the antagonist! She is now Katarina who is suppose to face some very bad ends when the game reaches its conclusion. Well, she doesn’t want that! So she starts out her afterlife preparing for banishment, which at least is better than any of the other ends she could get. She works on her magic (but sucks) and her gardening so she can take care of herself.

Katarina also spends her time righting all of the wrongs that the original Katarina had done in the game, because she’s not that type of person. She’s nice. Of course, this new personality puzzles all of the other characters, but they like it. In fact, they love it. Everyone simply adores her and wants to be around her all the time and can’t stand to be away from her! Meanwhile, Katarina is completely clueless to all of her admirers. She can easily be described as a dense airhead who loves food, but she has a certain charm.

The plots of each of the My Next Life as a Villainess books are silly and nonsensical and I couldn’t get enough of them! While this is nowhere near a favorite series of mine, I always wanted to know what was coming next. It was never what I was expecting. The plots do get stronger and more engaging as the series moves along, so that’s a plus. At the beginning it was a bit repetitive, since we often got the same scenes but from different characters POVs. It let us get to know everyone and how they react to Katarina, but the stories could have flowed better if they were new scenes rather than re-visitations.

The fifth book is actually a collection of shorts from throughout the first four books. It’s more scenes from alternate POVs. Some I liked better than others, as is the case with any anthology. They were mostly cute though and a good refresher if it’s been awhile if you’ve read the series.
