Series Report: Hades & Persphone #1-3 by Scarlett St. Clair

A few warnings: These books contain death, violence, suicide, torture, stalking, kidnapping, attempted rape, discussions of rape, PTSD, and blackmail.

I haven’t read many Hades and Persephone retellings, but of the few that I’ve read, this series has been my favorite. Persephone is a young goddess that no one knows about. Her mother, Demeter, has kept her hidden away in a greenhouse her entire life, but now Persephone wants a life. She goes to the mortal world in order to go to college, and she’s loving her life. Then she meets Hades, the god that everyone fears. She writes an article on him, which blows up, and on her quest for a followup, they fall in love.

These books are jam packed with drama, lust, passion, and a failure to communicate! It’s very clear that Hades and Persephone are madly in love and want to make their relationship work despite the world being against them. But these two just do not know how to talk to each other! They’re very good at telling the other that they don’t trust them and should listen and that they’re not communication properly, all without actually communicating! Just because they’re gods, doesn’t make them all knowing!

Persephone did frustrate me at times, but it was all part of her journey. She’s been isolated for the past 20+ years, and then most of her adult interactions have been with mortals, so she does tend to make decisions more like a mortal. Meanwhile, Hades has been a god forever so he thinks like a god, and is actually much more…balanced than Persephone. He might come across as cold at times, but it’s because he’s had millennia of experience in this world, and Persephone is just now learning it.

The one thing that I was confused about was the world. I do really enjoyed the world-building that’s included, but it left me with a lot of questions. This is clearly modern times, given the technology and lifestyles present, but is it our world? I’m assuming yes, but the only location ever mentioned is New Greece, which is a modern day Greece but where the gods are very much present. Does the rest of the world have their own gods hanging around? Is it only Greece? Do these gods affect other places? Are there even other places? I just don’t know!

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist.

Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible.

After a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever.

The bet does more than expose Persephone’s failure as a goddess, however. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows—and it’s forbidden.

Persephone and Hades are engaged. In retaliation, Demeter summons a snowstorm that cripples New Greece, and refuses to lift the blizzard unless her daughter calls off her engagement.

When the Olympians intervene, Persephone finds her future in the hands of ancient gods, and they are divided. Do they allow Persephone to marry Hades and go to war with Demeter or prohibit their union and take up arms against the God of the Dead?

Nothing is certain but the promise of war.
