Sienna Murphy never does anything without a plan. And so far her plans have been working. Right after college, she got a prestigious job and gained the stability she'd always craved-until work takes her to the sun-drenched shores of Oahu and places her in the path of sexy surfer Luke Everett. For the first time, she lets her heart take control. Drawn to his carefree charm, she makes a spontaneous and very un-Sienna-like decision to drop everything and stay in Hawaii for two more weeks.
Luke lives fast and wild. When he meets Sienna, he's convinced that some no-strings-attached fun is just what she needs. As their nights quickly turn from playful to passionate, Luke can't deny the deep connection he feels. But there's a reason Luke doesn't do long-term. He can't promise Sienna forever, when the enormity of his past has shown him just how fragile the future can be . . .
Proceed With Caution:
This book contains discussions of death, suicide, grief, and severed limbs.
The Moment of Letting Go is narrated by twenty-two-year-old Sienna, an event planner on a job in Hawaii, and twenty-six-year-old Luke, a surf instructor with a more laid-back approach to life. The two meet, hit it off, and he asks her to stay for a real vacation when her work is done. Sienna is all about the hustle, but she’s drawn to Luke, so she stays for two weeks, and will never be the same again.
I really should have read The Moment of Letting Go way back when it first came out, because it’s exactly the type of New Adult Romance that I love! Thankfully, it still holds up today, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It had just the right amount of angst, without going overboard and feeling cliche. I really liked Sienna and Luke and believed their chemistry and their eventual “breakup.”
The Moment of Letting Go is all about letting go, obviously. Sienna is essentially a workaholic after her parents always struggled to make ends meet. She never wants to have to worry about money and wants to help her parents out since they continue to struggle. She never takes time for herself, and certainly doesn’t spend enough time for her hobbies or passions. Luke helps her see that there’s more to life than making more and more money. You gotta live too!
Meanwhile, Luke has a dark secret. It’s not some crazy out-there thing. It’s normal and likely relatable to a lot of people. He’s not dealing with it at all though, instead taking risks with dangerous activities like surfing during storms, rock-climbing, and BASE jumping. When Sienna eventually learns what’s really going on with him, she doesn’t judge him. She doesn’t give him an ultimatum. She simply points out that he is not dealing, he needs to, and she can’t fix him. I loved how Sienna refused to put herself in that position for her own well-being.
The Moment of Letting Go was just good. It’s a great mix of light-hearted fun as Luke shows Sienna around Oahu and helps her with her fear of heights, and darker emotional moments when Sienna helps Luke to face his past. Definitely recommend.
