Murder. Payback. Chaos. If you’re looking for a story about unicorns and rainbows, this ain’t it. Now, if you’re in the mood for something a little psychotic and a whole lot crazy, then you’re in the right place.

I’m Lola Harding. My parents used to call me their angel, but they’re dead now. For the last few years, I’ve made a name for myself—the Night Slayer. I stalk the clubs and make sure anyone with greedy hands and stupid ideas is permanently taken off the streets.

One night I happen to kill the son of a crime lord, and then everything changes.

They’re going to kill me, I know, but until they do, I’m to be their pet, wear their leash and do whatever they say. The Lucianos are a family full of psychos and hatred… and I just might fit in better than I ever did anywhere else.

And as a bonus? The other sons are the handsome and dangerous type, and even though they despise me for what I did to their brother, even though there might not be any light left for me at the end of this tunnel… I plan to enjoy the ride.

Buckle up, b*tches, because it’s about to get wild.

Proceed With Caution:

This book contains murder, blood, rape, and self harm.

The Basics:

Shadowed Heart is the start of a “dark” NA Erotica series with a reverse harem. Lola is a young serial killer known as the Night Slayer, who only targets men. Bad men, of course. But one night, Lola kills the son of a local crime family and his brothers come for her. Luckily, their father thinks she can be useful, so instead of immediately putting her to death, he puts her to work. Meanwhile, the boys work her in other ways.

My Thoughts:

Shadowed Heart is one of those books that thinks it’s edgy but it’s really not. It’s told in alternating POV between Lola, three of the guys, and the father, and all of them break the fourth wall. It’s a style that usually works for me, but here it was kind of annoying. Like all of the characters just had to remind the reader of how awful they are all the time, and how they hate everyone, and the world is awful, and blah blah blah.

I’ve found myself really enjoyed reverse harem Romance and Erotica despite the terrible name, but Shadowed Heart was not a favorite. The sex was pretty bad. There’s no tension. There’s no lust. There’s no anticipation! Lola says she’s kinky, but hate sex isn’t kinky. Also, a knife handle isn’t shocking. I’ve read that before and there’s really no danger to it. Also, none of the characters have any chemistry. The guys all hate Lola (which they constantly remind us of) but they can’t keep their hands off her. She thinks they’re hot. That’s it. Hate sex can be fun and sexy, but in this case, it was just words on the page. I didn’t believe any of it.

Lola has a secret. She spends much of Shadowed Heart hinting at said secret. It was really built up that it was going to be huge and terrible and shocking. Well, it was terrible and gross, but not the shock that it should have been. Again, this is nothing new. It’s always the same thing over and over and over again. It’s like this is the absolute worst thing that authors can think of, but since they’re all using it, it loses its shock value. I do hope she gets her revenge though, because it is objectively effed up.

In the end, Shadowed Heart just didn’t do it for me. I felt like I read this story before but with different names. Lola was trying too hard to come across as edgy and crazy or whatever. All of the guys read the same, and I couldn’t keep them straight. The sex is bland. It was just…blah.
